Again, this is my personal views of my householder path. I offer it only as a journal, not as telling a reader how to define their own way.
My integrated householder path begins with a question like:
“How can I meet this person with loving presence?”
My decoupling practice begins with a different question:
“What is happening in my own mind before I meet this person?”
One faces outward.
One faces inward.
One cultivates love.
One removes the obstacles to love.
That distinction feels significant.
Loving presence is generative
When I practise loving presence, I am intentionally bringing qualities into the relationship:
curiosity
patience
generosity
listening
warmth
It is an active orientation toward another human being.
Decoupling is subtractive
Your decoupling practice doesn’t add anything.
It removes.
It notices:
“This is irritation.”
“This is the thought that she isn’t listening.”
“This is the idea that I need to convince her.”
Already, the relationship has become cleaner.
You’ve stopped unconsciously asking the other person to carry your mental state.
As a leader, husband, father, or yoga teacher, that’s a profound shift.
